Doing:
Up early to get SWMBO and Little Mr to the Zoo Run this morning. SWMBO did the 4 miles, Little Mr did the 1 mile. Not a bad morning for it, and they enjoyed their runs. Twigged my left somethingsomething knee ligament, so hobbled for a bit, but seems like it's just a strain.

Working:
No work today, other than the continuous storm inside my head.

Reading:
Finished "All the President's Men" last night. Whoa.

Thinking:
There's a something brewing.

09/19/2018

Working:
Much more sane without the 3 hours in traffic. Finally nailed down the Business Objects problem, but a fix, a fix is more complicated.

Home:
Moved a couch out of the living room last night, off to the donation sale @ the parents-in-law church. Much internal cursing. Dog got ball thrown a lot for him, so he's happy.

Doing:
W4D2 down.

Thinking:
Need to pick up "all the president's men" from the library.

9/18/2018

Working:
Wednesday was supposed to be a work day. Instead it was 3 hours in traffic and some work in between. Good discussions about some automation tasks, and lots of frustration around the Business Objects platform.

Home:
Helped little mr with math homework, then cattleprodded him to take care of some chores. Didn't do much else

Doing:
Off day on C25K

Thinking:
Finished "The Show That Never Ends", Dave Weigel's volume on progrock. Pretty interesting read.

9/15/2018

Working:
Saturday, so did some thinking about a great question an old friend asked about an article I wrote on metrics.

Home:
Need to see if there's still a water hammer, but I think I'll end up working on the yard today.

Worked on the yard. Too hot.

Doing:
W3D2 of C25K done.

Thinking:

9/13/2018

Took a bit of a break from blogging, trying to get some normalcy back into my days, but also thinking through what I wanted to write about.  Going to move from a straight chronological retelling of my day to more of a narrative.

Working:
Sort of bitsy day. Patch imports, troubleshooting missing agents, taking a peek into the inner workings of the SA agent. Lockdowns are such silly things.

Home:
Seems that the water hammer I've been dealing with is all around the stupid builder grade shutoff valve on the upstairs toilet. Finally replaced that yesterday (ick - boy toilet!) and everything seems to have calmed down. No banging (knock on wood)

Need to tinker on a couple more projects: finish off the boy's room with the power strip - do I dare venture into the Little Man Cave?

Doing:
W3D1 of C25K done. Nothing hurts too bad: it was the 1.5/1.5/3/3/3/3 day, and everything seemed to go OK. off tomorrow, then on saturday repeat.
Diet has been OK. I do wonder if I'm not quite eating enough.

Labor Day (Labour).

Up ridiculously early. Watered flowers as the dog sniffed around out front.

Breakfast and coffee.

Threw balls for dog. Greeted boy as he arose after his sleepin. Got him fed, changed his sheets / lightly cleaned his room, then he was occupied with electronic distractions.

Changed our own sheets, and then pottered around in the garage. Light cleaning up, organizing, retrieving SWMBO's bicycle and the carrier for it ready for tuning up.  Wilted a bit, it was hot in the garage.

A bit of a lie down, then lunch, and then the boy had lunch.

RoR: CRUD / database operations are exactly what I want to tinker with, so I think I have a solid means to do what I want @ work.

Power went out for a solid minute or so, all recovered.

Set up database server for consolidated development work - Postgres.

Breakfast: overnight oats plus water. A solid breakfast.

Ruby for an hour, things clicking.

Roused young master from slumber, cattleprodded out the door. He didn't get rained on.

Work work work work.

John McCain has passed.

I have a lot of problems with the way in which John McCain served the nation - policy problems. But I never ever lost respect for the man, nor did I ever question his motives. He believed in America.  He believed you could disagree, and still be friends.

Requiescat in pace.

Up early.

Took the boy to Oceans of Fun, good time, but started to go downhill after we got home, overtired, dehydrated.

Nap.

Dinner, then watched "The Greatest Showman"

Castles made of sand - Jimi Hendrix

"Castles Made Of Sand"

Down the street you can hear her scream "you're a disgrace"
As she slams the door in his drunken face,
And now he stands outside and all the neighbours start to gossip and drool.

He cries "Oh girl, you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?"
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green.

And so castles made of sand, fall in the sea, eventually.

A little Indian brave who before he was ten, played war games in
the woods with his Indian friends, and he built a dream that when he
grew up, he would be a fearless warrior Indian Chief.

Many moons passed and more the dream grew strong, until tomorrow
He would sing his first war song,
And fight his first battle, but something went wrong,
Suprise attack killed him in his sleep that night

And so castles made of sand, melts into the sea eventually.

There was a young girl, whose heart was a frown,
Because she was crippled for life, and couldn't speak a sound
And she wished and prayed she would stop living, so she decided to die.
She drew her wheel chair to the edge of the shore, and to her legs she smiled

"You won't hurt me no more."
But then a sight she'd never seen made her JUMP AND SAY
"Look, a golden winged ship is passing my way"
And it really didn't have to stop...it just kept on going.
And so castles made of sand slips into the sea,
Eventually

8/22/2018

Awoke at 4:40AM, was up in plenty of time to awaken little Mr at 5:52AM, as per his request. He didn't get up until later, but promises kept!

Breakfast. Jimmy Dean Spicy Jalapeno breakfast biscuits: not spicy at all.

Got little Mr off to the bus, then had to commute myself.

Work work work work. Decent meeting, then no lunch and then worked through until 5.

Commute sucked.

Dinner, mowed back lawns, threw balls for the dog, made breakfast for tomorrow. Quick note jotting for tomorrow morning, ran out the clock watching BattleBots with little mr.

08/21/2018

Up early: 4:45AM to be precise. 7 hours seems to about the right amount of sleep for me.

Some mumbling about in the work environment, quickly troubleshot a problem and got everyone calmed down.

Got the cups google print connector to work correctly, hopefully I can get Little Mr's school Chromebook to be able to print to it solidly.

http://foo2hp.rkkda.com/

Breakfast with Young Master. Got him squared away and off to school, it's picture day, and he was dressed appropriately.

Work work work work.

Twitter is an unneeded distraction.

Lunch!

work work work work work, more work that is ultimately thrown away. Sigh.

TKD with little Mr: more hard seats, but i like to watch him working with the little kids.

Dinner: mcD's for everyone else, salad for me. I noticed a very solid correlation between the sugar high and the crash later for little Mr.

Back to School Night @ middle school: disaster. Look, I appreciate wanting parents to meet teachers and vice-versa, but it's not exactly a useful thing to cram us all into the building for 2 hours where you can get a 2 minute discussion with a teacher who has known your kid for less than a week.

Home via grocery store. Trash collection for tomorrow morning, bed.

08/17/2018

Up early, donut run. Let the dog out as I watered plants, he heard a kid calling for her pet (cat / dog / something), and became very concerned. I'm hard on the dog, but he's my furball.

Brekky, catching up on a little overnight dataloading action, but once the coffee is consumed, I start working on the weeding.

08/19/2018

Up early, did some work on the vertica backend that's been troubling me as I ate breakfast. Still not a lot of clues as to why the ETL isn't working right: I'm thinking it might just be broken and that the upgrade to OBR is the only way forward.

Allowed little mr to sleep in, he was up at 9. Fed him breakfast and then he toddled off to some chores an then sequestered himself with his tablet.

I, on the other hand, went outside to work on the yard. Right after a run to the pet store, Lowe's, Sam's for food and gas,  before the rain. Got the front mowed and the front and back trimmed, before I discovered that I had mysteriously misplaced my tractor key. Darnit.

Then the rain came down. And kept coming. To the point that I Was concerned that we would see water in the family room. Soooooo, I ended up trenching and sweeping water away until the rain passed. We probably got a solid 1" to 1.5" of rain in a couple of hours. Good news is, no water in the family room. Bad news is: my waterproof jackets aren't waterproof. I was Soaked.

Came inside, changed, then ran out the close with little Mr watching TV.

08/16/2018

Up early, no Ruby / RoR, not in the right mindset for it.

Breakfast with the boy, got him off to school. He's working through the changes that middle school brings: organization is key, and the pain we're going through now will pay off in spades in a couple of months.

Work work work work.

Lunch.

Work work work work. Genuine confusion at some of the reasoning for things to be done certain ways, but a) I like being mysterious and b) these are really just ruminations.

TKD with Little Mr: it's always a treat to watch him lead a class of younger kids. I like that he's a leader when he wants to be.

Dinner out with the fam: Red Robin do a good burger. Yogurtini does good yogurt.

Finished out the evening with TV with little mr, just chatting.

Thursday, August 16, 2018

08/15/2018

Up early: let the dog out and put the trash out.

Breakfast with little Mr post-rising. He's off to day 1 of Middle School. Navigated the trouble of a missing schedule, clothing choices and backpack packing, photos on the steps, then he toddled off.

Work work workity work.

Lunch.

Work work work.

Little Mr made it home from Middle School. Got more than 1 word answers from him! Good day, no homework, chromebook home tomorrow, really looking forward to industrial tech as a class!

Dinner with the parents-in-law so they could get the debrief on the day, and then threw balls for the dog / weeded a bit, before bed.

Wednesday, August 15, 2018

8/14/2018

Woke up to rain. Wandered out to water plants. Why water when it's raining? It was just a gentle soaker, so the plants that are juuuuuust under the overhang of my garage weren't getting any water.

Ran the dog around for a bit: he sniffed all the things.

Breakfast.

A little more Ruby.

Working hard while Little Mr is out and about at his middle school transition.

Lunch. Ah. Should have taken the chicken out of the crockpot a bit earlier.

Work work work work.

Dinner, preparation for school.

A little "Forged in Fire", and then toddled off to bed.

Tuesday, August 14, 2018

8/13/2018

Up early, dog outside while I watered plants. I missed my furball.

Revelation: I am working to rule. Pay for 40 hours means 40 hours work.

Atom to Git integration: success!

Some Ruby / RoR this morning.

Young master was arisen at 0630 in preparation for school, did well. Showered, breakfasted, and then bundled off at 9-ish for a familiarization visit to his middle school.

Started work at 7. Work to rule and no guilt at not working overtime.

9000 emails whittled down to 2500 or so. Nothing major seems to have to broken.

The usual stupidity.

Balls for the dog, breakfast for dinner, catching up on some TV.

Sunday, August 12, 2018

8/12/2018

Donut run this morning. Nothing for me, just for the family.

Watered the flowers out front, we may yet save some. Pulled noxious grasses as much as I could: bring on the rain.

Breakfast was my normal: overnight oats and water/coffee. It's very simple to make and the right way to start the morning.

Noisestorm - Breakdown, on repeat today.

Ruby / RoR: updated gems on workstation.

Retrieved dog from most awesome dog-sitter, met the new Dane.

Small hiccup on the drive home. Current suspect is a little rust sludge stopping up the ingress / egress of coolant in the Mountaineer, leading to overheating. Let it cool, depressurized the system, seems OK.

Returned home and caught up with neighbor who was in Costa Rica while we were away. Compared travel stories.

Weeded 1/3 of back patio, threw balls for dog, rendered both dog and self non-functional.

Lunch consumed.

A small nap may / may not have occurred.

Dinner.

Dog exhaustion part deux.

8/11/2018

FreeBSD installed yesterday, but not a lot of progress on it. Not sure I've got more than an install to scratch the itch in me.

Instead, got sidetracked onto Ruby on Rails learning. I have a couple of ideas in my head where I want to prove out some concepts before building a couple of projects, which is why I'm back on RoR.

The limitations of brain space and time are... confining.

Still, it's one of those learning opportunities. I have spun up a VM with a ruby pristine environment on it, and have spent a bit of time working through things:

1) Ruby install
2) Ruby on Rails install
3) git repository creation
4) remote repo clone / management
5) lots of note-y stuff in between.

Also did some minor reorganizing of my work environment, moved my laptop up next to my 21" monitor for home development so that it's all one level. This sounds like a small thing, but it really does make a difference.

GMail is a terrible webapp: 2GB of memory. Moving over to Thunderbird makes that a little less annoying.

On one new thing a day

Today it's FreeBSD install. The joys of virtual machines means that I can simply stand up a VM, fire off the install and then wait for it to be done.

FreeBSD has been a long-standing want of mine to investigate, and so let the tinkering begin!

On the forgetfulness of things

And a lesson in sometimes it's easier to rebuild than it is to recover.

Apparently my vacation was good enough that I forgot my ssh passphrase for Github. After some googling as to whether it was feasible to recover it, nope, just log in, remove old key, create new one, and push.

The cost / benefit was just right.

The score since returning from vacation

One filler valve: replaced.
One stinky trash bag: bleached.

Successful return from vacation, much refreshed, ready to tackle a pile of projects around the house, around the office, and around myself.
